Fabrication Coach (Welding)

Leveraging extensive experience in structural welding, fabrication, and maintenance, the Coach uplifts trade skills, promotes a safety-first culture, and ensures adherence to Austal’s standards in build quality and productivity.

• Provide practical coaching in fabrication and welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, ARC, and aluminum welding.
• Reinforce the correct application of blueprints, drawings, and technical work instructions on the floor.
• Supervise and coach on safe cutting, grinding, and hot work practices, particularly during high-risk tasks (e.g., confined spaces, overhead welding).
• Address technical performance issues on-the-job, offering immediate corrective feedback to reduce rework.
• Promote craftsmanship and quality awareness by guiding proper joint preparation, fit-up, and distortion control.
• Assist Supervisors in matching individual trade skills to work tasks for optimal labor efficiency.
• Encourage accountability and pride in workmanship by recognizing improvements and consistent quality output.
• Monitor the effectiveness of technical training in both the workshop and designated training centers.
• Champion compliance with safety regulations and maintain a hazard-aware workforce.

• 10+ years’ experience in structural fabrication and welding, including maintenance and production environments.
• Recognized trade qualification in Welding or Fabrication (e.g., Welding Certificate).
• Advanced skills in welding various materials including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
• Proven ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and perform layout/assembly work with precision.
• Experience mentoring and training new welders, with a focus on safety, technique, and work quality.
• Strong track record in implementing preventative maintenance and contributing to safe work environments.
• Effective communicator with the ability to deliver clear instructions and constructive feedback.
• Experience in multi-project or high-throughput shipbuilding environments.
