Position Overview
The Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection, identification, processing, and logistics of blood specimens. For non-licensed candidates, this role offers an entry-level pathway to perform venipunctures under direct supervision, helping you build the required clinical hours and competency for professional certification.
Key Responsibilities- Specimen Collection: Perform safe, accurate venipunctures (drawing blood from veins) and capillary punctures (finger sticks) on patients of all groups.
- Patient Interaction: Verify patient identity using dual identifiers, explain collection procedures clearly, and provide a calm, reassuring presence to anxious patients.
- Safety & Infection Control: Maintain a sterile work environment. Strictly adhere to OSHA guidelines, universal precautions, and clinic safety protocols to prevent cross-contamination.
- Data Entry & Labeling: Accurately label all specimen tubes at the bedside or chairside immediately following collection. Log patient data into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Processing & Logistics: Prepare, centrifuge, and package blood samples for transport or in-house laboratory analysis according to specific test requirements.
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- College graduate or equivalent.
- Completion of a recognized Phlebotomy training program OR equivalent on-the-job clinical training (e.g., Medical Assistant training).
- Excellent communication skills and empathy for patients experiencing anxiety or physical discomfort.
- Strong manual dexterity and close attention to detail.
Preferred (But Not Required):
- Active Phlebotomy Certification (e.g., CPT via NHA, AMT, or ASCP).
- Note for Non-Licensed Applicants: Must be willing to work under direct supervision and actively work toward passing a certification exam within 6 to 12 months of hire.
- Previous experience in an outpatient clinic or fast-paced laboratory setting.
- Familiarity with basic electronic medical records software.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the shift.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and fine motor manipulation.
- Exposure to biological specimens and sharps (needles); strict compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mandates is required.
