Constructing and repairing structures using materials like brick, concrete, and stone, requiring skills in reading blueprints, mixing mortar, and ensuring structures meet safety and building codes.

Responsibilities:

• Construction: Laying bricks, blocks, or stones according to construction plans.
• Material Preparation: Mixing and applying mortar to bind materials.
• Repair and Maintenance: Repairing and maintaining existing masonry structures.
• Blueprint Interpretation: Reading and interpreting construction blueprints to determine layout and dimensions.
• Safety: Ensuring structures meet safety and building codes.
• Tool Usage: Operating hand and power tools, such as trowels, hammers, saws, and levels.
• Surface Finishing: Smoothing and finishing surfaces of poured concrete.
• Material Handling: Lifting and moving heavy materials and equipment.
• Teamwork: Communicating effectively with team members to coordinate workflow.
• Cleanliness: Cleaning and maintaining tools, equipment, and work areas.
• Problem Solving: Identifying and resolving issues related to masonry work.

Skills and Abilities:

• Physical Stamina and Strength: Masons need to be physically fit and strong to handle heavy materials and tools.
• Dexterity and Hand-Eye Coordination: Excellent hand-eye coordination and dexterity are essential for precise work, such as aligning bricks and applying mortar.
• Blueprint Reading: The ability to read and interpret blueprints and other technical documents is crucial for understanding project requirements.
• Knowledge of Masonry Techniques and Materials: Masons need a thorough understanding of various masonry techniques, materials, and tools.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Masons need to be able to identify and solve problems that arise during construction.
• Attention to Detail: Masons must pay close attention to detail to ensure the quality and precision of their work.
• Communication Skills: Masons need to be able to communicate effectively with other workers, supervisors, and clients.
• Safety Awareness: Masons must be aware of and follow safety procedures and regulations.
• Working with Tools: Proficiency in using both hand and power tools is essential.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent: A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required.
• Previous Experience: Previous experience as a mason or in a related field is often preferred.
• Apprenticeship or Training: Completion of a mason apprenticeship or other masonry training is beneficial.
• Vocational Diploma/Short Course Certificate in Masonry (NC II): Some positions may require a vocational diploma or short course certificate in masonry.
