A book illustrator is a visual artist who creates artwork that accompanies, enhances, and complements written text in books, such as children's literature, graphic novels, or non-fiction, primarily to help tell a story. They interpret a manuscript and translate its themes, characters, and settings into compelling visual images, collaborating closely with authors, editors, and publishers.

• Strong illustration skills with a consistent, professional art style
• Ability to read and understand creative briefs, reference material, and follow feedback accurately
• Comfortable working on deadlines and managing multiple assignments
• Strong communication skills and responsiveness during project timelines
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

• Previous professional illustration experience (freelance or studio preferred)
• Portfolio demonstrating a range of illustration styles and subjects, with a preference for children’s books and/or realistic styles
• Experience with children's books, educational materials, or publishing (preferred, if applicable)
• Experience doing storyboarding
• Strong understanding of composition, color, lighting, and character design
• Familiarity with typography and layout considerations preferred
• Experience working with revisions and feedback

• Proficiency in digital illustration tools such as:
• Adobe Photoshop
• Procreate
• Clip Studio Paint
• or equivalent software
• Ability to deliver layered, organized files when requested
• Ability to work at required print specifications (e.g., CMYK, 300 DPI, bleed settings, etc.)
• Reliable internet connection and ability to communicate via: Slack, Teams, and Email
