ABOUT THE CLIENT

Our client is a well-established building merchant based in Cambridge, New Zealand, supplying timber, hardware, and general building materials to local builders and contractors. As part of their service offering, they provide accurate material takeoffs and pricing based on client plans.

To improve turnaround time and manage costs more effectively, they are now looking to engage a part-time Quantity Surveyor to assist with material quantification and coding.

ROLE OVERVIEW

This role focuses primarily on pre-construction estimating, specifically the quantification of materials from building plans and aligning those takeoffs with product codes in the Qontro system. The work is project-based and flexible, with around 10 plans per month.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform quantity takeoffs from building plans (PDF/CSV format).
  • Accurately identify and quantify materials such as timber, steel, mesh, bolts, etc.
  • Match quantities with internal product codes using the Qontro system.
  • Deliver completed estimates in the client's format for pricing and procurement.
  • Collaborate directly with the client via email or phone on a per-project basis.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in quantity surveying, estimating, or material takeoffs.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in New Zealand building codes and pricing practices.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
  • Familiarity with estimating timber and general building hardware.
  • Experience working with Qontro (or similar inventory/estimating systems).
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in material quantification.
  • Good English communication skills.
  • Reliable internet connection and availability for flexible project-based work.
NICE TO HAVE
  • Prior experience working remotely or in subcontracted estimating roles.
  • Background in working with suppliers, hardware stores, or merchants.
