The Book Designer plays a vital role in the company by designing a wide variety of books for Tellwell authors. Whether it be fiction, nonfiction, memoirs or kids’ books, you take written guidance from the author and project manager to execute a visually appealing design that makes the author, and Tellwell, proud.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

• Use technical design skills to create cover and/or interiors of books that meet set standards and guidelines for quality and technical attributes.
• Support the Lead Designer to implement strategies to maximize the quality of our design program while working efficiently to meet deadlines.
• Stay on top of best practices and emerging trends in design, layout, and formatting of printed and electronic books.
• Communicate effectively with everyone in the team to deliver quality design work and/or implement book revisions efficiently and at a high-quality.
• Help translate author/s ideas and/or instructions to a book they can be proud of.
• Ensure the task tracker/s is/are updated accordingly and in a timely manner.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Tellwell Management.

• High-level of proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud products, specifically InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro
• High-level of proficiency with paragraph and character styles, master pages, frames, GREP, and more
• Passion for designing high quality and creative book covers and interiors, while still incorporating author requests and ideas
• Keen interest in the book design industry, including a strong knowledge of past and present design trends
• Interest in continuing to learn and grow with design products and trends
• Experience working with large, multi-page documents, ability to “place” text and properly import and format images for print and ebooks
• Independence, professionalism, and responsibility: you can manage your own schedule and be accountable to our clients
• Organized: able to stay on top of many projects
• Positive attitude in the face of both positive and negative feedback from authors, and tight deadlines
• Initiative, innovative mind, and business sense: able to create and recommend better ways to deliver our services
• Adaptable: can improvise when necessary and adjust to many duties and process changes
• An interest or passion for books, writing, or publishing
