Celluloid Film Editor

A celluloid film editor handles physical film reels and performs tasks such as:

• Reviewing raw footage (dailies) to select the best takes
• Cutting and splicing film strips using specialized tools (e.g., splicers, tape, cement)
• Organizing reels and sequences in the correct narrative order
• Synchronizing audio with picture (often manually)
• Collaborating with the director to shape pacing, tone, and storytelling
• Maintaining film integrity (avoiding damage, scratches, or misalignment)

They may use classic editing machines like the Moviola or flatbed editors such as the Steenbeck.

• Strong understanding of film language and storytelling
• Manual dexterity and attention to detail (handling delicate film strips)
• Knowledge of film formats (16mm, 35mm, etc.)
• Ability to visualize sequences without digital previews
• Patience and precision in physical editing processes
• Familiarity with sound synchronization techniques
