About the role
The Senior Naval Architect is responsible for delivering high-quality naval architecture designs while focusing on the development and technical growth of the junior naval architecture team. Reporting to the Structural Coordinator, this role ensures seamless integration between naval architecture and structural design, embeds best practices, and enhances overall design quality.
The position requires a hands-on leader and mentor capable of guiding junior engineers from supported contributors to confident professionals who can independently manage design deliverables and make sound engineering decisions.
Key objectives & responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop and mentor junior naval architects and structural designers, building technical independence.
- Conduct regular design reviews, technical walkthroughs, and structured coaching sessions.
- Lead and review critical naval architecture deliverables including stability, hydrostatics, weight control, and vessel performance.
- Report to the Structural Coordinator, aligning on priorities, workloads, and technical strategy.
- Identify and escalate technical risks, compliance issues, and design challenges in a timely manner.
- Liaise with Class and Flag authorities to ensure accurate, compliant, and timely submissions.
- Support team performance management, resource planning, and succession planning initiatives.
- Promote adherence to safety policies, company standards, and a positive workplace culture.
- Provide hands-on guidance for complex technical problems and continuous improvement of design processes.
- Foster collaboration, cross-functional alignment, and knowledge sharing within the design team.
Required Skills / Experience / Attributes
Essential:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering
- 10+ years of ship design experience
- Strong competency in stability, weight control, trim, performance analysis, and regulatory compliance
- Solid working knowledge of Class Rules, IMO regulations, and Flag requirements
- Experience mentoring and developing junior naval architects
- Comfortable leading multi-discipline teams in multicultural environments
- Excellent communication, leadership, and coaching skills
Desirable:
- Experience with green energy vessels or alternative fuel systems (LNG, biofuels, hydrogen, hybrid propulsion)
- Experience in aluminium vessel design
- Direct involvement in construction support, commissioning, and sea trials of high-speed vessels
