Job Description

The Senior Engineer – Geotechnical is responsible for providing geotechnical leadership and technical support to underground operations to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable mining outcomes. The role supports the integration of geotechnical considerations across mine planning, development, stopping, and operational activities while driving continuous improvement in geotechnical systems, monitoring, and risk management practices.

Reporting to the Superintendent – Geotechnical, this position will also provide alternate superintendent coverage and operational leadership support as required, offering a strong development pathway toward future technical leadership. The role will play a key part in mentoring and developing technical capability within the geotechnical team while supporting a strong operational and safety-focused culture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide geotechnical engineering support and technical leadership to underground operations and technical services teams.
  • Develop and maintain geotechnical management plans, ground control standards, monitoring systems, and engineering procedures.
  • Monitor underground ground conditions, seismicity, and excavation performance to identify and manage geotechnical risks.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop geotechnical professionals while promoting a strong safety culture and high performing team environment.
  • Conduct geotechnical assessments and provide recommendations for mine development, stopping, sequencing, pillar design, and ground support requirements.
  • Support Life of Mine, medium-term, and short-term planning activities through integration of geotechnical inputs and constraints.
  • Develop and maintain site-specific geotechnical models through ongoing reconciliation and data analysis.
  • Conduct geotechnical investigations, risk assessments, and technical studies to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives through innovation, technology adoption, and optimization of geotechnical practices and systems.
  • Provide relief coverage and operational support for the Superintendent – Geotechnical as required.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and engineering best practices.
  • Build strong working relationships across operations, technical services, and corporate teams to support safe and effective operational delivery.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, or related discipline.
  • Extensive underground geotechnical engineering experience within hard rock underground mining operations, preferably mechanized open stoping environments (minimum 8 years).
  • Strong knowledge of rock mechanics, ground control, underground excavation stability, and geotechnical risk management principles.
  • Experience with geotechnical monitoring systems, instrumentation, and numerical modelling techniques.
  • Proficiency in Rocscience software suite and mine planning packages such as Deswik and/or Surpac.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience supervising, mentoring, and coaching engineers within an operational mining environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams.
