Position Summary

The Development Team Leader reports directly to the Project Manager, with additional support from the CEO. This is a hands-on leadership role, responsible for guiding a team of skilled developers focused on maintaining and expanding both internal and customer-facing systems.

Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively between internal stakeholders and the development team are key. The role is accountable for ensuring projects are delivered on time, to a high standard, and in line with business requirements.

Key responsibilities of the role

This role is expected to evolve alongside organizational’s growth, offering opportunities to shape team structure, technical standards, and project delivery practices. Initially, the focus will include:

  • Provide hands-on support to developers at the code level, offering guidance and troubleshooting assistance. Fostering the growth
  • Lead and manage the delivery of multiple complex development projects from design through to release.
  • Contribute to technical solutions, from initial design through to implementation.
  • Set up and manage:
  • Automated unit testing for existing systems.
  • CI/CD pipelines.
  • Documentation processes for systems and code, including legacy code.
  • Plan and implement system upgrades and replacements
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager and internal stakeholders to:
  • Produce accurate project specifications and delivery estimates.
  • Manage project phases, including activities, sub-activities, milestones, and documentation.
  • Ensure strong stakeholder involvement and maintain robust communication throughout project life cycles.
  • Provide regular progress updates and manage delivery risks and issues.
  • Align and coordinate with internal teams for seamless system implementation.
  • Participate in project reviews and post-implementation evaluations.
  • Support department capacity planning and resource scheduling.
  • Make key decisions to ensure the successful implementation of projects and initiatives.

Experience & Technical Skills

Experience with the following tools (or similar) and a demonstrated ability to quickly learn new packages will be highly regarded:

  • Team leadership and mentoring
  • Solution design and implementation
  • MAMP (Linux experience is a plus)
  • PHP and Laravel
  • MySQL
  • API design and implementation
  • GitHub
  • JavaScript / jQuery
  • Agile development
  • JSON

Key Selection Criteria

To be considered for this role, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong English language skills, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to work in Melbourne (Australia) hours to align with company head office.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a senior development role, ideally within telecommunications.
  • 2+ years’ experience in team leadership, including working with remote-based teams.
  • Strong understanding of PHP and GitHub.
  • Strong understanding of SQL queries.
  • Initiative to ‘roll up your sleeves’ and figure things out when necessary.
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently as well as part of the development team.
