Media & PR Operator (Data-Driven Stories) - WFH

Overview

We are looking for a sharp, commercially minded media operator to help turn data and insights into high-quality media coverage.

This is not a traditional PR or content role. You will work at the intersection of data, storytelling, and media, identifying strong story angles and getting them in front of the right journalists.

The focus is on quality over volume. Fewer, better stories. Well targeted. Well executed.

• Identify newsworthy story angles from internal insights and credible external data sources
• Shape those angles into clear, compelling media narratives
• Pitch stories to relevant journalists across local, state, and national media
• Manage outreach, follow-ups, and ongoing media engagement
• Monitor the news cycle and respond to relevant opportunities with timely, data-backed insights
• Respond to inbound media inquiries with clear, concise commentary
• Help ensure consistency of messaging across media, newsletter, and on-site content

What This Role Is (and Isn’t)

This role is:

• Editorially driven
• Execution-focused
• High judgment, low noise

This role is not:

• A content marketing position
• A social media role
• A high-volume PR distribution function

What We’re Looking For

• Background in journalism, PR, or media relations
• Demonstrated experience pitching stories to media and securing coverage
• Strong understanding of how journalists think and what makes a story land

• Excellent written English. Clear, direct, and concise
• Strong spoken English. Able to communicate clearly, confidently, and succinctly with journalists in real time, including calls, interviews, and follow-ups
• Strong editorial instinct. Ability to identify what is and isn’t a story
• Ability to work quickly and make sound judgment calls
• Comfortable working with data and translating it into narratives
• Strong attention to detail in targeting and outreach

• Experience with business, economic, or startup-related topics
• Familiarity with the Australian media landscape
• Experience working with data-driven or research-based stories

• Consistent placement of high-quality media stories
• Strong engagement from journalists
• Ability to move quickly on relevant news opportunities
• Clear, credible storytelling backed by data
• Clear, confident communication with journalists across both written and verbal channels
