Job Role: Accountant/Bookkeeper
Compensation range: $1,500 AUD - $2,000 AUD / Monthly

Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement

Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

They specialise in tailored financial support for small to medium-sized businesses—offering meticulous Xero-based bookkeeping, payroll and BAS/IAS lodgements, and training services.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accountant/Bookkeeper with a strong understanding of Australian accounting standards and regulatory requirements. This role is critical in ensuring accurate financial record-keeping, compliance with ATO regulations, timely BAS/IAS submissions, and supporting broader financial operations.

The ideal candidate will possess a high level of integrity, proficiency in accounting software (such as Xero, MYOB, or QuickBooks), and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

Bookkeeping & Financial Record Maintenance:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records including journals, ledgers, and reconciliations.
  • Record daily financial transactions and reconcile bank and credit card statements.
  • Manage accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR), including invoice creation and payment processing.
  • Track and categorize business expenses, ensuring compliance with tax regulations.

Compliance & Reporting:

  • Prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS), Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), and payroll tax submissions in accordance with ATO requirements.
  • Ensure GST, PAYG, and superannuation obligations are accurately calculated and submitted on time.
  • Assist with EOFY (end-of-financial-year) processes including reconciliations, adjustments, and reporting.

Payroll Processing:

  • Process weekly/fortnightly/monthly payroll including leave entitlements, superannuation, and tax withholdings.
  • Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with Fair Work and SuperStream standards.
  • Manage Single Touch Payroll (STP) submissions.

Financial Analysis & Support:

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports, cash flow forecasts, and budget tracking.
  • Assist in preparing financial statements and supporting documentation for external accountants or auditors.
  • Provide insights to management on financial performance and suggest cost-saving or efficiency improvements.

Software & System Management:

  • Proficient use of accounting software such as Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, or similar platforms.
  • Utilize cloud-based tools and platforms for file management, communication, and reporting.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in bookkeeping or accounting roles within the Australian context.
  • Solid knowledge of Australian taxation laws, BAS/IAS, and payroll regulations.
  • Proficiency in Xero (preferred), MYOB, QuickBooks, or similar software.
  • Strong Excel and data analysis skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.

Work Arrangement & Expectations:

This is a remote role that will be set up as an independent contractor engagement.

  • Be available for meetings and collaboration during core [AEST or PHT] business hours
  • Disclose any existing ongoing roles or client work
