The goal of the Restaurant Manager is to keep restaurant operations running smoothly to create a positive atmosphere for customers.

Common duties and responsibilities of a Restaurant Manager include:

  1. Recruiting, interviewing and training staff to follow restaurant procedures.
  2. Maintaining safety and food quality standards.
  3. Keeping customers happy, getting their feedback on the experience and handling complaints.
  4. Organizing schedules, keeping track of employees’ hours and recording payroll data.
  5. Ordering food, linens, gloves and other supplies while staying within budget limitations.
  6. Supervising daily shift operations, including front- and back-of-house restaurant operations.
  7. Controlling operational costs and identifying ways to cut waste.
  8. Appraising staff performance and disciplining or retraining employees to correct poor performance.

Previous restaurant experience
Management or supervisory experience
Customer service skills
Training in food safety
Financial literacy
Inventory control skills
Knowledge of restaurant management software

Ability to handle a fast-paced work environment

Remarks

Restaurant Managers typically need previous restaurant experience, whether that’s as a Server, Bartender or Chef. This helps them understand how restaurants work and feel prepared for the unique challenges they might face. We might also expect that the Restaurant Manager candidates to have supervisory experience, particularly in the hospitality industry, so they understand the duties of the job.

It can be helpful to have experience in a similar type of restaurant. Restaurant such as Japanese or international is an advantage.
