Planning and Design Functions- Conducts research on latest and emerging technologies related to database and database components.
- Leads POCs and testing to assess fit-for-purpose database technologies.
- Updates and improves database architecture and standards based on reliable research and/or POC conducted.
- Manages the Procurement Process in relation to the acquisition of database- related assets.
- Responsible for the recommendation of suitable databases for upcoming applications based on business requirements, license considerations, technical feasibility, and performance.
- Responsible for the build process for new databases, including fine tuning and optimization in connection with application functional and performance testing to guarantee suitability for production deployment.
- Integrates database configuration with CI/CD pipelines and automates deployments where possible.
- Evaluates and integrates emerging database platforms, such as NoSQL, time-series databases, or graph databases, and other cloud-native databases based on business requirements.
- Responsible for the administration, maintenance, and support activities of the enterprise’s databases that may reside in multiple platforms.
- Manages the diagnosis, isolation, and debugging of database problems in order to perform problem resolution. Performs incident and problem management for database-related issues to ensure proper resolution is implemented to maintain IT SLA.
- Monitors database performance, plans and executes disaster recovery procedures, and provides Tier-2 technical support.
- Establishes strategies for efficient and reliable database allocation and configuration, and defines backup, recovery, and archival procedures.
- Develops regular reports to be used as input for system optimization, problem and incident resolution, and daily operations.
- Develops and establishes efficient database monitoring and control strategies, service delivery standards, and procedures for the enterprise.
- Manage escalated incidents, problems, or service requests regarding the department’s systems and services in collaboration with the other OVP-DITS departments.
- Initiate or review purchase requests or disbursements of the department
- Establishes and implements business continuity practices for database management.
- Monitors use and availability of database resources. Maintains and modifies backup and recovery procedures to meet high availability and mission-critical business needs.
- Manages and controls corporate database-related licenses to ensure compliance to database licensing models.
- Performs management of vendors and contracts.
- Performs capacity forecasting and trend analysis to ensure databases scale efficiently as data and user loads grow.
- Implements observability tools for proactive database health monitoring and/ visualization.
- Implements Role-Based Access Control and least-privilege principles for sensitive data.
- Contributes in the development and standardization of the Database Platforms domain under Enterprise Architecture and DITS Standards and Processes.
- Assists in the analysis and development of solutions to resolve DITS-related problems and incidents.
- Provides consultancy and support services to the University, including review and assessment of IT requirements and as-is and to-be IT infrastructure
- Supports DITS Client Managers with consultancy in managing the demands, issues, and concerns of serviced offices.
- Conducts internal knowledge-sharing sessions or training on database technologies and best practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong command of SQL, PL/SQL, and database management tools
- Strong working knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards
- Strong working knowledge of Database administration principles and troubleshooting techniques
- Strong working knowledge of infrastructure and tools
- Strong working knowledge of infrastructure design, implementation, and operations in a multi-site environment, including cloud
- Strong working knowledge in developing, implementing, and managing IT Service Management processes, methodologies, and tools
- Ability to perform IT budget management
- Ability to quickly learn new concepts and technologies in infrastructure
- Familiarity with RDBMS (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL platforms (MongoDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB)
- Knowledge of cloud-based database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL, GCP Spanner)
- Proficiency with scripting languages for automation (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell)
- Knowledge of containerized database deployments (Docker, Kubernetes operators for DBs)
- Understanding of data masking, anonymization, and encryption techniques
- Familiarity with AI/ML-assisted database performance tools
- Exposure to data warehouse or data lake technologies
- Familiarity with Agile and DevOps environments
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, with strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Excellent problem-solving and time management skills
Education and Experience Requirements:
- At least Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related course (or equivalent relevant work experience)
- At least 5 years in a similar role and/or in a Database Administrator role in an enterprise environment.
- Experience with implementing and supporting enterprise IT systems and solutions and applying technology to solve business problems.
- Experience working in organizations that apply the concepts of SEI CMMI, ITSM/ITIL, COBIT, or other related standards and methodologies.
- Experience in preparing the IT infrastructure’s high-level and low-level designs, including high availability and disaster recovery.
- Database management
- Basic database administration, configuration, and troubleshooting

- Enterprise Data Storage Solutions
- Data protection solutions, backup and recovery tools
- Cloud-based technologies (i.e., AWS, Azure, etc.)

- Experience with data migration projects (e.g., legacy to cloud, SQL to NoSQL)
- Certifications (Optional/Preferred):
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
- AWS Certified Database – Specialty
- Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
- Google Cloud Certified: Professional Data Engineer
- ITIL v4 Foundations or intermediate certification
