Job Summary

The Home Economics Teacher is responsible for providing functional, life-skills-based instruction to students with diverse learning needs. The teacher develops and implements individualized and group lessons that promote independence, daily living skills, vocational readiness, self-care, nutrition, household management, and community participation.

The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary team members, including therapists, psychologists, and families, to support each student's educational and functional goals.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction and Program Implementation

Plan and deliver Home Economics and life-skills lessons appropriate to students' developmental, cognitive, and functional levels.
Teach practical skills such as meal preparation, food safety, nutrition, personal hygiene, laundry, clothing care, household management, budgeting, shopping, and basic consumer skills.
Adapt instructional materials, activities, and teaching strategies to meet individual student needs.
Incorporate visual supports, assistive technology, task analysis, and other evidence-based teaching methods.

Provide opportunities for hands-on learning and real-life application of skills.

Student Support and Development
Promote independence, self-determination, and functional living skills.
Support the development of social, communication, and vocational skills during instructional activities.
Implement behavior support strategies and classroom management techniques consistent with student support plans.

Monitor and document student progress toward educational and functional goals.

Assessment and Documentation
Conduct ongoing assessments of student performance and skill acquisition.
Maintain accurate records, progress notes, and reports.
Participate in the development, implementation, and review of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or individualized learning plans.

Contribute data and recommendations during multidisciplinary team meetings.

Collaboration and Family Engagement

Work collaboratively with occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, special education teachers, and other professionals.
Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers regarding student progress and home-based skill reinforcement.

Participate in parent conferences, case discussions, and school activities.

Safety and Classroom Management
Maintain a safe, organized, and supportive learning environment.
Ensure proper use of kitchen equipment, household tools, and instructional materials.
Implement health, safety, and risk-management procedures during practical activities.

Supervise students closely during cooking, community-based, and vocational activities.

Professional Responsibilities
Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
Stay informed about best practices in special education, life-skills instruction, and transition planning.

Support school-wide programs, events, and community-based learning activities.

Qualifications/Requirements

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Home Economics, Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), Family and Consumer Sciences, Education, or a related field.
Licensed Professional Teacher (preferred).
Experience working with children or young adults with special needs is preferred.
Knowledge of differentiated instruction, behavior management, and life-skills education.

Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Preferred Competencies

Experience teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Down Syndrome, ADHD, or other developmental disabilities.
Familiarity with visual supports, AAC, task analysis, and functional curriculum approaches.
Ability to design individualized and meaningful learning experiences.
