The Barista OIC is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the coffee and beverage station while ensuring the consistent preparation of high-quality beverages and excellent customer service. This role serves as the lead barista, supervising daily workflow, maintaining beverage quality standards, managing inventory, and ensuring food safety and sanitation compliance.

The Barista OIC is expected to be hands-on in beverage preparation while leading the barista team to achieve operational excellence in a high-volume canteen or café environment.

Key Responsibilities

Beverage Operations
  • Oversee the daily operations of the coffee and beverage station.
  • Prepare and serve espresso-based beverages, brewed coffee, teas, frappes, smoothies, and other specialty drinks according to standardized recipes.
  • Ensure consistency in beverage quality, presentation, and portioning.
  • Monitor beverage production to maintain speed, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure beverage stations are fully stocked and operational before and during service.
  • Maintain proper calibration and operation of coffee equipment.
Operational Leadership
  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of baristas.
  • Assign workstations and monitor team performance during operations.
  • Ensure smooth workflow during peak service hours.
  • Provide hands-on support in beverage preparation whenever necessary.
  • Resolve operational concerns and customer issues promptly.
  • Coordinate with the Kitchen Supervisor and Cafeteria Supervisor regarding daily operations and promotions.
Quality Assurance
  • Conduct routine quality checks on beverages before serving.
  • Ensure all recipes and beverage standards are consistently followed.
  • Monitor ingredient freshness and product shelf life.
  • Recommend improvements to beverage offerings and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain high standards for beverage taste, appearance, and consistency.
Customer Service
  • Deliver professional, friendly, and efficient customer service.
  • Assist customers with beverage recommendations and product inquiries.
  • Handle customer concerns courteously and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Promote a welcoming and positive café experience.
Inventory & Cost Control
  • Monitor daily inventory of coffee beans, syrups, milk, tea, powders, and other supplies.
  • Prepare stock requisitions and coordinate replenishment.
  • Minimize beverage waste through proper portioning and preparation.
  • Monitor stock rotation using FIFO (First In, First Out).
  • Assist in periodic inventory counts and stock reconciliation.
  • Report shortages, damaged items, and equipment issues promptly.
Food Safety & Sanitation
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of coffee machines, grinders, blenders, refrigerators, and workstations.
  • Monitor beverage holding temperatures and proper storage conditions.
  • Ensure all utensils and equipment are cleaned and sanitized regularly.
  • Follow company SOPs and food safety regulations at all times.
Equipment Maintenance
  • Perform daily cleaning and basic preventive maintenance of coffee machines and equipment.
  • Monitor equipment performance and report maintenance needs immediately.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of all equipment and tools.
Training & Team Development
  • Train and coach newly hired baristas on beverage preparation, customer service, and company standards.
  • Conduct refresher training on recipes, beverage techniques, and operational procedures.
  • Monitor staff performance and provide coaching for continuous improvement.
  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, and accountability within the beverage team.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Complete required inventory, wastage, temperature, and production records.
  • Ensure compliance with company SOPs, food safety policies, and operational guidelines.
  • Support internal and external audits by maintaining accurate documentation.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of Hospitality Management, HRM, Culinary Arts, or any related field is an advantage.
  • At least 2–3 years of experience as a Barista, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Strong knowledge of espresso extraction, milk steaming, latte art, and specialty beverage preparation.
  • Experience in high-volume café, coffee shop, or institutional beverage operations.
  • Knowledge of inventory management, cost control, and food safety standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in operating commercial espresso machines, grinders, blenders, and beverage equipment.
  • Willing to work flexible schedules, including weekends and holidays if required.
