About the AU RTO Instructional Designer (Automotive) Role

This is not your average content development job. As our Instructional Designer, you’re building the future of automotive training. You’ll research, design, and develop comprehensive training materials that align with industry standards, keeping technicians and students up-to-date with the latest advancements.

You’ll collaborate with trainers, assessors, and industry experts to craft resources that are clear, compliant, and impactful. You’ll also ensure everything from student guides to assessment tools is industry-ready and mapped to the highest standards of competency.

Your Key Responsibilities:

Research & Planning:

  • Review industry standards, regulations (ADR, WHS), and best practices.
  • Analyze automotive technology advancements and diagnostic procedures.
  • Gather technical information from workshop manuals and other sources.
  • Plan course outlines and learning objectives based on training needs.
  • Consult with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), trainers, and assessors for content validation.

Developing Training Materials:

  • Write and design training materials, including PowerPoint presentations, student workbooks, and trainer guides.
  • Create practical assessments, observation checklists, SOPs, and task sheets.
  • Document technical procedures and specifications in user-friendly formats.
  • Develop multiple-choice and short-answer questions aligned with learning outcomes.

Creating Assessments & Observation Criteria:

  • Develop practical assessments to evaluate student competency.
  • Write knowledge-based assessments that align with qualification requirements.
  • Define benchmarks for workplace observations and practical tasks.

Reviewing & Editing:

  • Proofread and revise training materials for clarity and accuracy.
  • Ensure content adheres to style guides and industry standards.
  • Update materials based on regulatory changes or technology advancements.

Collaborating & Consulting:

  • Work closely with trainers and assessors to ensure content meets their needs.
  • Gather feedback from industry professionals to keep materials current.
  • Collaborate with instructional designers to enhance e-learning and digital content.

Compliance & Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure materials align with WHS guidelines and industry standards.
  • Cross-check content with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain compliance with AQF, ASQA, and other national training packages.

Technical Writing & Document Management:

  • Write detailed manuals, workbooks, and student guides.
  • Document technical processes for diagnosing and repairing automotive systems.
  • Organize content logically for clear understanding and practical use.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Regularly review and update training materials to reflect industry advancements.
  • Identify gaps in content and proactively create solutions.
  • Stay current with emerging automotive technologies and diagnostic tools.

  • You’re familiar with Australian Design Rules (ADR), WHS standards, and environmental requirements.
  • You’ve written SOPs, student workbooks, and technical manuals that are easy to understand.
  • If you’ve worked with LMS platforms like Moodle or Canvas, that’s a huge plus.

  • Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM AEST
  • Location: Work from home (PH-based)
